Collector notes

The 1920-stamped Gewehr 98 is a Weimar administrative mark, applied to rifles remaining in official hands after the First World War. The S.28 marking is uncommon and is often misread. It is not a wartime K98k letter code (those run S/42, 42, byf, and so on). Collectors should photograph the receiver ring, barrel code, and stock stamp together, and should not assume a 1920 date is a year of manufacture. Original manufacture is usually wartime Gewehr 98 production; the 1920 mark records retention, not a new rifle. Fakes exist. Compare stamp geometry and depth with known examples before paying a rarity premium.
