Collector notes

This specimen is photographed in full: 1920 on the receiver ring, serial 301 on the barrel with a later WaA eagle, 301 over letter suffix h on the receiver, and 301 in the stock channel, on the bolt, and on the rear band. Matching numbers are the first fact. Most 1920-stamped G98s are wartime rifles retained under Versailles; an S28 is not — it is newly manufactured. Parts carry the maker’s code S28. Right side of the action: Weimar eagle with S underneath (Simson). Left side: Weimar eagle and later Nazi-era proof together. Tangent rear sight, not Lange — Oberndorf-supplied for the permission G98s, not an S/42 K98k. Conclusion: made new by Simson under Versailles restrictions, before the National Socialist takeover that became BSW (Berlin-Suhler Waffen- und Fahrzeugwerke).
