Collector notes

A 1938 Oberndorf K98k is the pattern against which later wartime rifles are judged. High-polish blue, walnut rather than laminate, and careful fitting are expected. The S/42 code is the early Oberndorf military code (later 42, then byf). Matching numbers across bolt, receiver, bands, and stock disc still matter more than an extra percentage of remaining blue. Do not refinish. A correct 1938 rifle is a reference piece for every later variation in this gallery.
